Guesthouses in Newquay: Avalon Guest House
70Guesthouses in Newquay: Avalon Guest House
There are hundreds of guesthouses in Newquay, Cornwall - but until you arrive, how do you know whether you've picked a gem or not?
One thing that's essential to a relaxing holiday in Newquay is to know that you've booked into a good guesthouse, run by welcoming hosts - and with Avalon Guest House you've hit the jackpot. Janet Partner and Rick Blakeney have been running the Avalon Guest House in Newquay since 2005 and provide a warm welcome and a fabulously filling full English breakfast.
The Avalon Guest House has just six well-appointed bedrooms, but there's no skimping on quality or style - and the price belies the high quality and good service.
The six rooms are named after King Arthur's Knights of the Roundtable, reminding you that you're in Cornwall now - and all the myths and legends of its historic past surround you.
You can choose between The Launcelot, Galahad, Perceval, Bedivere, Gawain or Tristan. My favourite has to be the The Galahad as it has patio doors onto a covered patio/verandah, overlooking the quiet residential road. However, whichever room you pick you'll have a digital TV and coffee-making facilities to hand. Four of the rooms have either an en-suite, or a private bathroom.
Many guesthouses in Newquay don't have any parking, but the Avalon does have parking on-site, although it can get a little tight in the peak season, with a little toing and froing everybody's accommodated!
Designed by Silvanus Trevail
The Avalon Guest House in Newquay has a distinctive look. It is half of a pair of semis designed by well-known Cornish architect Silvanus Trevail. Also, the next door house, a detached, was designed by Silvanus Trevail.
If you're keen on architecture, in particular the works of Silvanus Trevail, then why not book yourself a short break at the Avalon and live in a Silvanus Trevail designed house.
Silvanus Trevail was a pioneer of tourism in Newquay in the 1870s, when it was still quite a rough and ready village. Silvanus Trevail also designed the famous Headland Hotel in Newquay. He had a vision of creating many top quality hotels across the town, where guests could swap around between them on a whim, an ill-fated idea, but a great architect.

Guesthouses in Newquay: Avalon Guest House - A fabulously well-run and welcoming guest house, near to Newquay Station. perfectly placed for strolling to Tolcarne Beach or Great Western Beach.
Avalon Guest House: Location
The Avalon guesthouse is superbly positioned in a quiet residential street, just minutes from the vibrant town of Newquay.
If you're fully laden with luggage and arrive by train at Newquay Railway Station, it'll still take you only about 4-5 minutes to walk.
The Avalon is equi-distant between Great Western Beach and Tolcarne Beach, both are just 100 yards away and if you're an early riser then it can be a great start to the day to walk round the corner and enjoy the view before breakfast.
The Avalon is handy if you need a fairly level walk to the centre of town, which is just about half a mile away.
if you're arriving by car, then you won't have to navigate your way round the one-way system of Newquay town centre, the Avalon guesthouse is just one street back from Narrowcliff, one of the main Newquay approach roads.
Within easy walking distance, you'll find Newquay Zoo, Trenance Boating Lake, Trenance Riding Stables, the swimming pool, tennis courts, bowling green and skatepark. In fact, there's no need to take your car out at all if you don't want to.
Newquay bus station is 3/4 of a mile away, so if you're arriving by bus then you can either catch a bus to the north end of town, walk, or ask to be collected when you make your booking.
In fact, nothing's far at all!
If you're flying into Newquay Airport, then ask about the airport transfer service, you'll be picked up and brought back to the Avalon - and the route's stunning.
Avalon Guest House Rates
Rates at the Avalon guest house are very reasonable, in my opinion they're too cheap!
Prices are per person, per night and start at just £25/person/night. In fact, the most you'll pay is £35/person/night on bank holidays - surprisingly affordable for such a well-run establishment.
There are family rooms and a discount for children under 12.
The Avalon has a no smoking policy.
One thing you won't get at the Avalon Guest House is a surly look, or poor service. You'll be treated just like family and everything possible done to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable.
Janet and Rick really go out of their way to ensure all their guests' needs are met, with a smile, and you'll want to book again.

You mention the next door house - it used to belong to the family of Thurstan Collins, solicitor, who lost his two sons in the Great War. They are commemorated on the Newquay War Memorial and in St Michael's Church. You can read about Gerald and Percival Collins on my blog, see my profile page. Love the Avalon, by the way - it looks lovely!
